DESCRIPTION
Electroacupuncture and traditional acupuncture are quite similar. Both use the same strategic points on the body. After the traditional acupuncture needles are inserted a device is connected to specific needles using small clips. The device sends a slight electric pulse into the area being treated. The frequency and intensity can be adjusted depending on the condition being treated. Multiple spots may be stimulated during a treatment. A similar technique call transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), uses pads taped to the surface of the skin rather then the use of needles. TENS can be useful in situations where the patient is afraid of needles or conditions that prevent needling. Electroacupuncture should not be used in cases where there is history of seizures, epilepsy, heart disease, stroke, or patients with pace makers. The head, throat, and directly over the heart should not be used for connection points for the electric pulse. Electroacupuncture stimulates the flow of qi, when it becomes accumulated as in cases of chronic pain.
