About acupuncture :
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based in part on a philosophy and belief that all parts of the universe are interconnected. Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and finds its origin some 3000 years ago in China, with written records circa the second century BCE. It is based on a theory that health is dependent on the balance and normal flow of Qi.
Qi (alternately Chi; pronounced “chee,”) is translated varyingly as “energy,” “breath,” or “life force;” and flows through the body along pathways or channels called meridians. These meridians can become blocked or stagnant, preventing the normal flow of Qi, and consequently affect health.
Acupuncture is based on the understanding that the meridians relate to twelve organs, including the spine, and abdomen. In order to remove blockage and eliminate stagnation of the Qi, hair-like needles are inserted into the body along corresponding points of the channel or pathway. When balance and normal flow of Qi is restored, then health returns.
Diagnosis and treatment often begin with an initial consultation followed by taking the pulse of both arms at the wrist. This routine is followed by an inspection of the tongue, which is believed to contain a map of the entire body, and is used to determine which acupuncture points to manipulate. The clinical practice that follows is highly individualized, and is based on philosophy, intuition, and mutual understanding between patient and practitioner. Diagnosis and consultation will also determine if other methods or means are needed to restore health.
Most modern medical practices attribute disease and sickness to physical causes such as bacteria, viruses, and genetic conditions. These disciplines isolate and separate the individual from the ailment. Traditional Chinese Medicine embraces a philosophy that treats the whole person instead of segregating the illness. These methods and traditions have been used for thousands of years by generations of people to maintain health and prevent sickness. Traditional Chinese Medicine is effective for physical, spiritual, emotional, and psychological problems.
